Speech Patterns

When speaking the common tongue, Skaven maintain their linguistic quirks:

  • High-pitched, squeaky voices
  • Rapid, hurried speech
  • Frequent repetition of words
  • Breaking thoughts into short fragments
  • Adding hisses and squeaks between words
  • Physical touching during conversation
Example Skaven Dialogue:
"Yes-yes! We strike-attack now-quick! Man-things will die-die! Great Horned Rat watch-see us! We take-steal their food-treasure! Make-create new weapon-tools from their metal-iron! They are weak-pathetic! We are strong-mighty! For the Under-Empire! Kill-slay them all-all!"

📕 Book of the Rat

A comprehensive-complete guide-manual for running-creating Skaven campaigns in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay!

About-Describe This Book

This Skaven project is based on notes and guidelines drawn up for a Skaven campaign with players as Skaven characters. Seeking more treachery and politics in campaigns, and looking for something new and groundbreaking, these rules were designed to bring the Under-Empire to life.

What's Inside-Contains:
  • Extensive background and descriptions of Skaven society
  • Detailed career paths for Skaven player characters
  • Rules and mechanics for treachery, politics, and clan dynamics
  • Combat skills and character development systems
  • Tools for creating in-depth Skaven opponents with history and depth
  • Adventure ideas and campaign inspiration

Creator's Note-Words

"Many, if not most people, will never intend on running a Skaven campaign. However, the extensive background and descriptions of Skaven society should help flesh the Skaven out to GMs who may never run the campaign but may get some use out of this work. Many of the careers and other descriptions should also inspire adventure ideas. It also allows GMs to make up Skaven opponents with some depth and history rather than applying the basic +30/+30/+2/+2/ etc. formula to the basic Skaven characteristics, and this book allows opponents to have combat skills."

Note-Remember: While these rules were designed for a specific-particular campaign and have not been extensively playtested, they provide-offer rich material for understanding Skaven culture, creating memorable opponents, and inspiring your own Under-Empire adventures!

📖 About the Skaven

The Skaven are a race of malevolent rat-men who inhabit the Under-Empire, a vast network of tunnels and caverns beneath the surface world.

Origins & Society

The Skaven worship the Horned Rat, a powerful deity of corruption and decay. Their society is brutal and treacherous, dominated by the Council of Thirteen and divided into powerful clans. Betrayal and backstabbing are common, as every Skaven seeks to climb the hierarchy.

The Great Clans

  • Clan Mors: Ruthless warriors who conquered Karak Eight Peaks
  • Clan Skryre: Mad engineers creating warpstone-powered weapons
  • Clan Eshin: Deadly assassins trained in the Far East
  • Clan Pestilens: Plague monks spreading disease and death
  • Clan Moulder: Flesh-crafters creating monstrous beasts

Warpstone & Technology

Skaven technology is powered by warpstone, solidified Chaos energy. While unstable and dangerous, it grants the Skaven terrible weapons like ratling guns, warp-lightning cannons, and doom wheels. Grey Seers consume warpstone to enhance their magical powers.

Lifespan & Culture

Most Skaven live only 25-35 years due to their violent culture, though powerful individuals can live for centuries. They breed rapidly, producing vast numbers to overwhelm their enemies. Physical touch is important in Skaven communication, and scent plays a crucial role in their social interactions.

The Curse of Thirteen: The number 13 holds special significance for the Skaven. The Council of Thirteen rules the Under-Empire, and the number appears throughout their culture and religious practices.
